Chapter 2
Therapy Is Learning, and Learning Has Conditions
You can't logic your way out of panic disorder. The active ingredient isn't the reframed thought. It is expectancy violation: the visceral, undeniable experience of doing the exact thing your brain promised would destroy you, and surviving it. The thoughts change after the behaviour has proved them wrong. The active ingredient is not insight, and it is not a worksheet. It's courage, followed by evidence.
Chapter 4
Sleep Is When the Session Is Saved
Sleep loss doesn't just make you tired. It takes the brakes off the alarm, and it closes the window in which new learning is saved. For someone in therapy, that is two problems at once.
Chapter 7
The Lyceum Sleep Protocol
Two weeks after we started, Ruth sent me a photograph. It showed a mug of coffee on her front step, steaming, with the light behind it. She'd written one line: 7.05, day 14, didn't miss once.
Every patient described in the book is a composite and no real person can be identified.
